I was thinking of starting an online business a few years ago. Like most of us do, I purchased a program to help me along with the details. I needed to build a website, traffic my site to draw in business, and somehow convert the visitors to buyers. There were about 100 different programs that promised to do all those things. Each one claimed to have the "secret" of Internet marketing, and all claimed to possess the key to make you a millionaire.
Yeah, that's something we've all heard before. Pay them $49.99 and you're on your way to untold wealth. I wasn't going to be fooled by those tricks and gimmicks. I searched around and found a program that helped me set up a website step-by-step, and gave me tips to generate some traffic. So, after a few months of planning, I had my site up. I had dealt so much with traffic generation that I forget a key aspect of my business: Payments.
Even if someone wanted to purchase my products, I had no means of accepting their payment. I assumed I could take only PayPal payments, but you'd be surprised just how few people actually use that to shop. I needed to be able to accept credit cards on my site, or I wasn't going to have any business at all. I put as much thought into Total Merchant Services as I did my web-building program. I was impressed by their resume. They'll even give you the services for free until a custom proposal is developed and accepted.
I run an online business so I'm not too worried about on-scene hardware or by-mail payments, but if you have that kind of business, Total Merchant Services deals with that too. Their POS (point-of-sale) credit card terminals are all high quality, and if you already have one, you can log your hardware on to their software and use their services and receive a better rate than what you're getting now.
Total Merchant Services customer service team took over the software for me and talked me through setting it up. Their software works fast, so as soon as someone places an order, it shows up in both my statements and the customer's. It may seem like a small detail in business, but actually, having a trustworthy company take the helm offering easy and secure payments is a must-have for any business. My startup company would have died on the vine without Total Merchant Services.
