Home Improvement Store Credit Cards Are Still More Appealing Than Ever

by T Miller

If you’re looking at making home renovations or considering a large-scale home improvement project, you know how costly it can be. The costs for construction supplies, hiring a qualified work force and paying the various fees for permits can quickly add up.

Most people think of banks as the only place to get a house remodeling loan, but hardware store credit cards are essentially loaning you money to upgrade your dwelling. Credit cards from home improvement stores have some extra advantages.

No Interest for a Limited Time: Many of those hardware store credit cards give you a period of 6 to 12 months with zero interest charges as long as you use the credit card in their store. Those savings could add up to big money if you are able to pay back all of the amount you borrowed on the credit card. Even more importantly, big stores like Lowe’s Home Centers may have several different credit cards available for your unique personal situation.

In-Store Discounts: When you initially use hardware store credit cards you will often get a small discount as well. You might save 3% - 15% on the total cost of the project, which could be a pretty good chunk of change at the end of the day.

Convenience of Shopping For Everything At Once: These large home improvement stores now offer just about everything you could need to upgrade your home and most offer lots of contractor services to actually do the work for you. Instead of visiting a dozen stores to find a kitchen sink you can go to one store and buy a faucet, a sink, a refrigerator, all the other appliances and even hire and schedule the installers all at one time. With one store credit card you can purchase the supplies you need as well as hire someone to do all the work for you!

Banks loan you money in hopes that they’ll make profit with the interest and fees you pay back. Big home improvement stores don’t have to make money on interest because they’ll be making their profit on the products and services you buy. Because of that they can usually offer lower interest rates and even better pricing. When you use a home improvement store credit card you’re locked into using a specific store, but if that store has everything you need then it’s definitely worth considering!

Mobile Eftpos For Mobile And New Businesses

by Pete Markinson

Mobile businesses nowdays have plenty of options for mobile EFTPOS transactions. The speed of billing and receiving payment is critical to success.

A technician can, for example, make a service call, invoice the customer and receive immediate payment rather than manually imprinting the customers credit card, which requires the business to get the paperwork to the bank or to enter it electronically at a later time, and which carries no guarantee that the charge will be authorised.

Not only are the charges higher but there is also a potential risk element to the transaction. With mobile EFTPOS, the processing can be done immediately. Importantly an EFTPOS solution supports debit cards, which cant be processed manually and manual terminals pose a security risk .

Alot of alternative phone options are not able to process Debit Card transactions either. This is usually around 40% - 50% of the total Eftpos transactions, and usually a much cheaper transaction option.

The differences between mobile devices themselves is whether the terminal does the communicating or if a mobile phone or PDA is used instead. The terminal is a far better option in the long run and allows the business to accept both credit and debit cards.

Alot of alternative phone options are not able to process Debit Card transactions either. This is usually around 40% - 50% of the total Eftpos transactions, and usually a much cheaper transaction option.

The process of handling a transaction using a mobile terminal is similar to a standalone EFTPOS transaction and far more secure for all parties concerned.

Get the Lowest Merchant Account Fees by Doing Comparisons

by Scott Johannson

If you’re just starting a new business you probably already know that you’ll need to get a merchant account. But do you know what to look for when you are comparing different companies? In this article we’ll take a look at a few different merchant account fees you’ll see so you can make a fair comparison.

Setup Fees: This is the first fee you’ll run into when dealing with a merchant account company. I’ve seen these fees range anywhere from $50-$700, so you really need to pay attention to how much a company is going to charge you.

Transaction Fees: This one is a given - all merchant account companies will charge a little bit for every transaction you process through your account. This is usually broken up into two parts. The first part is a flat rate, usually anywhere from $0.20 to $0.40. The second is a percentage, which can range anywhere from 1.55% to 5.0%. This rate is usually negotiable depending on how much you process each month.

Statement and Other Monthly Fees: There are several monthly merchant account fees that you’ll run into. Some of the standard ones are statement and gateway fees. These fees range all over the place. Some companies have decided to make this a yearly fee rather than a monthly fee.

Processing Limits: Another problem you run into from time to time is a low processing limit. If you have a limit on your account and need to process more in a given month you’ll usually have to renegotiate with the merchant company. Look for companies that either just grow with you or have a realistic limit that you can work with.

There are usually other fees that you’ll run into from time to time, but if you use these fees as a baseline to do your comparisons you should be able to find a really good deal on your next merchant account.

How to avoid credit card fraud

by Peter Carville

As online shopping becomes more popular with savvy consumers around the world, an unwelcome side-business has also increased in activity: credit card fraud.

Credit card fraud is certainly not limited to the online marketplace, however, internet users experience more than their fair share of dodgy transactions every day.

To protect your credit card details when shopping online is virtually impossible, but there are plenty of things you can do to minimize your risk.

Your first step towards protecting yourself against credit card fraud is very basic: be especially careful when using your credit card online. Never inputting your credit card details unless you’re certain the website is a reputable and trustworthy. Most online check-out systems allow you to pay via third party processors like PayPal, which offers added protection against credit fraudsters, so it would be wise to consider using these wherever possible.

Also, you should not respond to emails that ask you to follow certain links and enter confidential information - even if the site may appear to be a trusted, for example eBay or Amazon. Fraudsters have been successful in developing sophisticated websites and software that looks just like the real thing, so always assume that the link can not be trusted. Instead, shut down the window and open another browser, type in the web address manually, and carry on with your transaction this way.

It’s prudent to remember, as well, that emails are not secure, so you should think very carefully before sending credit card information via email.

In saying this, you should keep in mind that the internet can also help you to avoid becoming a victim of credit card. If you regularly check your account balance online - ideally, at least once per week - you can monitor your transactions and, hopefully, identify any unusual purchases early on. When you receive your monthly statement in the mail, you should also consider cross-referencing it with your receipts.

In an offline environment, never let your credit card out of your sight. Skimming - where credit card details are copied, and then duplicated onto new cards - is becoming more and more common, but there are steps you can take to minimize this risk.

If you’re in a restaurant, for example, don’t hand your card over to the waiter; instead, walk up with him or her to the cashier and hand over your card yourself. If you’re in a high-end restaurant and you’re embarrassed about transacting this way, apologize and tell the waiter that you’ve been the victim of credit card fraud in the past, so you prefer not to let your card out of your sight. It’s better to be embarrassed for a few minutes, then to find out that thousands of dollars worth of transactions have been illegally charged to your card!

What if your account has been compromised?

If you suspect illegal transactions have been charged to your credit card, inform your card provider immediately. They will immediately cancel your card and issue a fresh card, to prevent any further transactions from being applied. Also, if they investigate and do find that unlawful transactions have occurred, your account will be reimbursed.

However, have you ever considered blogging as a tool for marketing?

Basically, blogging is what people use today as a sort of journal. Some use it as an outlet of their frustrations by writing about it, others use it as a diary where people put in everything that happened to them on a particular day, but there are some people who found out that blogging can be a great tool for marketing.

You have to consider the fact that people do love to read blogs. And, with the millions of people logging in on the internet on a daily basis, you can just imagine how many people might enter your blogging website and read your blogs.

So, how can you market your products or services in a blogging website?

Well first of all, you have to remember that you should never treat blogs as a marketing tool although this is your purpose for it. Instead, try treating it as a way to communicate with other people. The last thing that people wants to see in a blog is some salesman trying to aggressively sell their wares on the blogs they wrote.

So, how can you sell your products?

You’ll be surprised as to how many ways you can market your products. You have to remember that people don’t like salesmen trying to push their products up on their faces. What they want is someone who is a regular person like they are who knows a little something about a particular thing, which is your product.

What this means is that when you write blogs, never try to be a salesman. Instead, you have to think like a customer who tried your product and loved it. Ask yourself what they would say about your product in a blog. By thinking and writing like a customer, you will be able to relate to other people. You will be on their side and you will be their friend.

That is how you should market on blogs. You need to be a customer who is satisfied with the products or services you are selling and that you are simply want people to know about it and that you recommend it. If you believe in your product or services so much, then you won’t have any problems at all.

To make this even more believable, try adding some of the pros and cons of the products. But, don’t emphasize the cons, just try to mention it.

Blogging can bring you fame if you do it right. Remember these tips and you will be well on your way in making your blog famous as well as your business and the products or services you are selling.

Head of Collection Agency Accused of Alleged Theft of $2.7 Million From the City Of Boston

by Jonathan Summers

A Grand Jury in Suffolk County, Mass. yesterday returned indictments against the president of a collection agency for purportedly stealing millions of dollars worth of excise taxes from the City of Boston.

Stephen Colahan, of Beverly, Mass. is charged with Larceny over $250 by Continuous Scheme and Procurement Fraud. Prosecutors assert that Colahan, over the course of five years, moved more than $2.7 million from a City of Boston bank account to his own companys account.

According to a press release from the Massachusetts Attorney General, from 1995 until June 2007 Colahans company, Walker Associates, Inc., was under contract with the City of Boston to collect delinquent motor vehicle excise taxes from Boston residents. Under the terms of the agreement, Walker was required to pay over to the city 100 percent of the taxes and statutory fees collected; the city would then pay Walker Associates a percentage of the fees the company had collected. Each week, Walker Associates was required to pay over to the city the amount of the previous weeks cash payments and cleared checks, and to provide a paper and electronic report detailing the amounts collected from each taxpayer and the date of collection.

Beginning in June 2001, Colahan allegedly began taking money out of the bank account into which his company deposited all of the citys tax and fee collections, and using that money to cover Walkers business expenses. Authorities allege that for the next five years, Colahan repeatedly stole from the citys account. From June 2001 through August 2006, authorities allege that Colahan transferred over $2.7 million to his own company account.

In October 2007, the states attorney generals office began an inquisition after the matter had been referred by the Boston Police Department and the City of Boston.

A Suffolk Grand Jury returned indictments against Colahan Tuesday. He is schedules for arraignment on May 12, 2009, in Suffolk Superior Court.

Eliminate Debt Fast Today!

by Paul J. Easton

Decide now to get rid of your credit card debt. Why now? This is because prolonging it only will cost you more money in the long term. Count all the money you spare each month for your credit card payments. Just think about what you could probably spend with this money if you were not paying the bills with the credit card company.

After convincing yourself, the first step in this very arduous process is to come up with a written plan for systematically reducing your debt. Get rid of all of your existing cards except one to avoid the temptation. Using them accumulates even more debt and more problems for you. Cut up the rest of the cards or put them in a place where you cannot have access for now.

Pay much more than the minimum every due date. You should be very reluctant in paying only the minimum on your credit cards because this only benefits the credit card company in the long run. After all, if you can’t manage to pay for more than the minimum balance every time, it is a strong indication that you are spending on something you can’t afford in the first place. By paying more than the minimum, you reduce how much you pay for interests every time. In addition, you deduct the principal thereby gradually turning the balance down. Following this process continuously will make you debt-free much sooner than paying only the minimum.

One method to get out of debt faster is by avoiding the card with the highest interest rates and transferring the balance to a card with a better rate. After the balance transfer, focus all your energy by paying off that card as soon as you can.

As an advice, you can also try talking with your credit card lenders. Ask for any hardship terms they can offer with you. Some larger credit card lenders have programs which help cardholders pay off their accounts at a much reduced rate. Just ask for those deals because they don’t promote it very willingly at times. Just make a good record by adhering to the terms closely because these schemes are strict. In most cases, if you make one missed payment, they will drop you off the program and all interest and fees will carry on the account.

By now, you are pretty convinced and will soon be making the decision to deal with your credit card debt finally. Working towards your goals consistently, you will definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel in due time.

The Logical Way of Spending with Cash

by Paul J. Easton

Turning your finances around is a logical game. It is very workable only with some great effort from the part of the debtor. Most importantly, paying off your debt should be a hard learning process for every one who undergoes the process. By undergoing the emotional ride of paying for a debt, you try your best next time to avoid committing the same financial pitfall.

In today’s recession, getting rid of debt should be dream for you. Take the time to think if you were not devoting a sizable chunk of your budget for the debt payments. What will you probably are doing with the extra money if you don’t have a debt? What will you probably do with the extra time if you don’t have that part time work to pay off those bills?

Paying the repayment with the interests can kill our peace of mind. We all hope that those debts will just go away. But the credit card companies will never stop calling you until you get paid. But what had been the problem why this occurred?

Spending for the next designer’s clothes seems logical. It is expensive but it is your stress reliever. After a long week of tiring work, you need some therapeutic shopping. After a month, you are being chased by your bills. Is that the true stress reliever?

Spending, like a lot of things in life, should be moderated. When you have a monthly income of $1,000 a month, how logical is spending $1,200 for that month? But most of us fall trap with this mistake. It’s easier right now to spend with your credit cards. But paying them is another story.

That’s where the bad news comes in. You need the ultimate discipline to protect yourself from spending haphazardly with your credit cards. If you can’t use it wisely, you have to better ditch it off. Buy only the vital things you need with cash or a debit card. I’ll emphasize again that you need to buy the things that you only need, not the things that you want.

Use the strict regimen of “buy as needed” until you have reduced a large portion of your debt. Keep monitoring through a list all the bills you pay. Eliminate the things that you do not necessarily need like that gym membership you really don’t attend to or that pricey cable TV package.

By keeping it up with the effort to revolutionize your spending habits in your pursuit for a debt-free life, you will soon be rewarded with the life without the hassles from debt paying. Only by having the relief of living a life debt-free, will you get more out of life.
